This tour is ideal for cycling enthusiasts—whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a recreational rider. The Eleven Cities Tour offers five days of cycling, with daily stages varying between 30 and 85 kilometers. It’s designed for those who want to complete the entire tour at a comfortable pace and stages between 50 and 80 km per day but with plenty of time to explore each of the historic Frisian cities along the route.

Optional extra: daytrip to the Wadden! (Ameland, Terschelling, or Vlieland)

Enhance your adventure with a day trip to one of the beautiful Wadden Islands: Ameland, Terschelling, or Vlieland. This excursion is not included in the standard package price but can be added for an unforgettable experience. The day trip starts after breakfast with a ferry ride to the island. After cycling on the island, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a local dinner (on your own account). Then, take the ferry back to the mainland for your overnight stay. The following morning, enjoy breakfast before continuing your Eleven Cities Tour.

Follow the famous Eleven Cities Tour by bike at a relaxed pace and enjoy tranquillity, open landscapes, waterways, and Frisian hospitality. This unique journey of approximately 270 kilometres takes you past historic towns, charming villages, and picturesque scenery—an experience you won’t soon forget.

Each cycling holiday in Friesland is tailor-made by us, with special attention to your wishes and comfort. Accommodations depend on availability; if a hotel is fully booked, we will reserve an equivalent alternative in the nearby area.
You stay along the Elfstedentocht route, though not necessarily in one of the Eleven Cities themselves.
You will receive the final travel itinerary with your accommodation addresses six weeks before departure (after full payment) by post.

Day 1: Arrival in Leeuwarden
Your cycling adventure begins in Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland and the official start and end point of the Elfstedentocht. Stroll along the canals, admire the leaning Oldehove tower, and visit the Fries Museum, where the history of the “Tour of All Tours” comes to life.

Day 2: Leeuwarden | Sneek | Joure (approx. 45 km)
The first stage of your Eleven Cities route leads you along rural roads to Sneek, famous for its iconic Water Gate and lively centre. You then continue cycling to Joure, a charming village full of history, known for Douwe Egberts and its traditional coffee culture.

Day 3: Joure | Sloten | Rijs (approx. 35 km)
Today’s stage is shorter—perfect for enjoying your surroundings to the fullest. In Sloten, the smallest of the Eleven Cities, time seems to stand still. You then cycle through the gently rolling Gaasterland region, with forested paths and beautiful views over Lake IJsselmeer. Overnight stay in or near Rijs, surrounded by nature.

Day 4: Rijs | Stavoren | Hindeloopen | Workum | Heeg (approx. 45 km)
Along the IJsselmeer coast, you follow the route once taken by the legendary ice skaters. You visit Stavoren, the oldest town in Friesland, with the statue of the “Lady of Stavoren.” Then comes colourful Hindeloopen, known for its wooden houses and hand-painted art, followed by Workum, the town of painter Jopie Huisman. You end the day in Heeg, a cosy watersports village with inviting terraces by the water.

Day 5: Heeg | IJlst | Bolsward | Harlingen (approx. 40 km)
Today you cycle through the heart of Friesland. In IJlst you can admire the sawmill and the gardens along the canal; in Bolsward you can enjoy historic architecture and monumental buildings. The day ends in Harlingen, the only Frisian city by the sea—a place full of maritime atmosphere, pleasant restaurants, and views of the Wadden Sea.

Day 6: Harlingen | Franeker | Holwerd (approx. 55 km)
From Harlingen you cycle northwards. In Franeker, a visit to the famous Eise Eisinga Planetarium, the oldest functioning planetarium in the world, is definitely worthwhile. The route then leads you through open meadow landscapes and small terp villages to Holwerd, the gateway to the Wadden Sea.

Important information for the overnight stay in Holwerd (Zee van Tijd Holwerd):
This accommodation does not have a restaurant. For dinner, you will dine at the Land en Zeezicht restaurant (at the ferry terminal), about 3 km from the hotel and situated within UNESCO World Heritage.
As a guest at Zee van Tijd Holwerd, you may use the Finnish sauna free of charge, and a welcome drink will be offered to you.

Day 7: Holwerd | Dokkum | Leeuwarden (approx. 50 km)
The final stage of your Eleven Cities cycling tour takes you via Dokkum, the northernmost of the Eleven Cities, known for the Boniface Chapel, back to Leeuwarden. The tour ends once your luggage has been delivered by the Friesland Holland driver (between 09:00 and 18:00). Dinner is never included on the day of departure.

Luggage transport

The luggage service is included in the price of the bike tour. Please note that:

Your luggage needs to be at the reception no later than 09.00 am.
Your luggage must have a label of Friesland Holland Travel (you will receive the labels together with the documentation)
Your luggage can be delivered until 18.00hr (if the luggage is not at the reception at 18.00, please call the emergency number in your documentation)
1 piece of luggage per person, max. 15kg.

Bicycle assistance (optional € 10,00 p.p.):

If the bicycle assistance is booked in advance, you will receive a new bicycle (within 1,5 hours) in case of a breakdown. This applies to your own bicycle and to rental bicycles. We will then bring the broken bicycle to the end point of your trip, here is your car parked.

Extra night

Book an extra night at the end of the bike tour, in this way you can end the tour quietly and relaxed and you don’t have to wait on your luggage. The luggage can be delivered until 18.00hr at your day of departure.
