On the second day, the actual cycling tour begins along quiet roads, terp landscapes, waterways, and stately estates.
Along the way, cyclists pass through places with a clear royal connection. From Aldtsjerk, where a well-known anecdote about a young Prince Willem-Alexander takes place, to Leeuwarden, the former Nassau residence city with the Stadhouderlijk Hof and the Prinzentuin. The Elfstedentocht monument is also visited, where among thousands of portraits of Elfstedentocht participants, the pseudonym W.A. van Buren can be found, under which King Willem-Alexander himself completed the tour in 1986.
The route continues through Sneek and Joure to Oranjewoud, an estate that literally radiates “Orange” and has been associated with the Frisian Nassaus for centuries. Afterwards, Beetsterzwaag and De Alde Feanen National Park follow, where nature, water, and history come together. The final stage passes Fogelsangh State, one of Friesland’s most beautiful estates, before returning to Dokkum.
