Fietselfstedentocht kicks off on Whit Monday

BOLSWARD – Early this morning, the 88th edition of the Fietselfstedentocht officially got underway. As tradition dictates, the event takes place on Whit Monday, and once again, around 15,000 enthusiastic cyclists gathered in Bolsward to complete the 235-kilometer route through the eleven historic cities of Friesland.

The first participants set off as early as 5:00 a.m., in groups of about 650 cyclists. A new group started every eight minutes to help spread out the flow of riders along the route. The course winds through cities such as Sneek, Harlingen, Leeuwarden, and Dokkum, with both a northern and a southern loop through the Frisian landscape.

The atmosphere along the route is vibrant, with live music, cheering spectators, and volunteers offering encouragement and support. In Sneek and Leeuwarden especially, the event has become a festive experience for both participants and the public.

The organization expects a safe and successful tour, thanks in large part to the efforts of more than 800 volunteers. Cyclists who reach the finish line in Bolsward before midnight will receive the coveted Elfsteden Medal as a reward for their achievement.

For those not riding themselves, the event can be followed live via RTV NOF, with coverage from places like Dokkum and Holwert.

The Fietselfstedentocht remains a unique blend of sport, tradition, and Frisian hospitality — a phenomenon that has inspired and moved thousands for decades.
